Pan's Labyrinth - Review

by vxt (July 25, 2007)

At first I didn't really enjoy this movie because, 1) It's subtitled, and 2) I came into it thinking it was a fantasy movie. This movie is not a fantasy movie and if you think of it as such, you will likely be disappointed. This movie should be thought more of as a fairy tale. The difference is that with fantasy stories, what you see is what you get, whereas with fairy tales, there is usually an underlyling message. The story is simplistic and the characters are pretty stereotypical, so what you should be looking for is the message the movie is trying to convey and how each element of the movie ties into conveying that message. This will give you a better appreciation for the movie. The only thing that I think was a little weak was lack of character development of the main character.

Aside from the story, I thought the movie was beautifully shot and directed. There was a very stylized feel to it.
