Star Trek (2009) - Review

As a fresh look on the Star Trek franchise, I thought the movie succeeded in its task. The actors must be commended for their efforts in their portrayal of the original characters. I thought the movie lacked a bit of pacing. It goes in full force and doesn't really ever slow down.
I thought the character of Bones was most accurately portrayed. It wasn't just what he said but the way he said it. The character of Kirk was also well represented, although not exactly matching the personality of the Kirk we know. This Kirk was more immature and rough around the edges but the likeness to Kirk's personality could clearly be seen. The Spock character was adequately portrayed but I could not find that characteristic that connected him with Leonard Nimoy's Spock. I found Zachary Quinto's Spock to be a bit too emotional. Perhaps that can be attributed to the character's young age?
The plot was quite simplistic. I don't necessary require twists and turns but a subplot often makes a story more dynamic. They may have made an attempt at a romantic subplot but it never fully developed. The amount of action made the movie seem short. There wasn't much unnecessary dialogue. Some people may like that but unnecessary dialogue can help character development. It's taken for granted that we already know these characters and are already attached to them.
Overall I enjoyed the movie despite its lack of pacing and narrow plot.
