Superman Returns - Review

by vxt (July 3, 2006)

Superman returns, and this time he's brought with him better special effects but that's about it.

Almost everything is the same, from the music to the intro credits sequence. Even the actor that plays Clark Kent / Superman (Brandon Routh) looks and sounds a bit like Christopher Reeve. Christopher Reeve had better hair though. Lex Luthor returns as Superman's nemesis played by Kevin Spacey. Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) now has a child and is living with? engaged to? Cyclops. Okay, it's not Cyclops, it's the actor that plays Cyclops in the X-Men movies, James Marsden. Poor Cyclops, leaving one love triangle just to get into another one.

So if Superman and Cyclops got into a fight who would win? That's an easy one, Superman. He's almost invincible. Cyclops would blast something with his laser eye and Superman would be do the same thing and say "What else you got?" The things that Superman does in this movie no other superhero could do. The only person that comes close I think is Rogue from X-Men but I don't think Rogue can stop bullets.

The thing that makes Superman a little boring as a superhero is that he has no equal. Lex Luthor is insufficient, that's why Superman II was the best Superman movie because he had to fight three villains with the same powers as his. On top of that it had a good story with him giving up his powers to be with Lois Lane.

This movie is a bit like the first Superman movie. It's pretty much what I expected. The problem with the Superman movies is that they don't have any good villains (with the exception of Superman II). That Sun guy in Superman IV was lame. I'm not a fan of the Superman comics so I don't know what enemies Superman has. A new villain would be refreshing, albeit possibly blasphemous.
